Wedding Process – Wedding Day 大喜之日

1. 大喜之日 – 出门 Setting off

Before setting off with his entourage, the groom will need to pray to the gods & ancestors and bow to his parents 3 times.

The groom leaves the house with 12 oranges and a “nappy”离乳 red packet for his mother-in-law. After the Groom leaves, his father will coordinate with the bride’s family to light the dragon and phoenix candles together.

2. 大喜之日 – 接新娘 Receiving the Bride

Upon reaching the Bride’s house, car horns will be sounded to signify the arrival of the groom. The Bride’s younger brother will be standing by with 2 oranges to open the car door for the Groom. A 开车门 red packet will be given to him for his effort.

Next will be the famous gate-crashing where the groom and his brothers will need to pass the tests set by the Bride’s sisters. Successfully passing the trials, the groom gets to meet the bride and unveils her with a kiss.

The Groom and Bride will need to bow 3 times to the bride’s parents before leaving to the Groom’s house. The Bride’s father will escort his daughter to the car using a red umbrella to symbolize a good shelter for the rest of her life.

3. 大喜之日 – 过门 Entering the Groom’s house

Upon arrival of the couple, the Groom’s family members will need to go into the rooms as the couple enters the house.

Traditionally this is done to prevent direct clashes between the Bride and the Groom’s family. They will re-enter the living room after the couple goes into a room. The couple will come out and the tea ceremony will take place.

4. 大喜之日 –敬茶 Tea Ceremony

Tea ceremony is a Chinese custom where the Bride is introduced to the Groom’s family. Kneeling down, the Groom and Bride will offer tea to their elders. Starting with the Groom’s parents, followed by his grandparents, granduncles and aunties, uncles and aunties and elder brothers and sisters. The elder relatives will give their blessings to the couple by giving them jewellery or red packets. Younger siblings and cousins will in turn, serve tea to the Groom and Bride.

After the tea ceremony, the couple is served with tang yuan 汤圆 in their bedroom. This practice is known as 结房圆, and a young boy is also invited to roll on the couple’s bed, to wish them a life blessed with children.

5. 大喜之日-回门 Returning to Bride’s home

After the tea ceremony at the Groom’s house, the Bride will change into her tea dress to return to her parent’s home. The Bride’s younger brother will invite his sister home by carrying a basket with powder, baby oil, chun 春 flower and ji 吉 flower.

The Bride will keep the items brought by her younger brother, put a fa gao 发糕 and 2 oranges into the same basket and return home as a married woman.
